6 Reasons (Besides The Obvious Ones) Why Timeless Is Awesome

So for those of you who don’t know (and quite possibly) have been living under a rock, Timeless is this super cool time travel show that got un-canceled because the fans loves it so much!

Me included!

timeless team back together season 2 lucy wyatt ruffus

Besides the great premise which is both fun and somewhat educational, we got interesting characters (both in the “good” and “bad” guy camps) and enough of a mystery with first Flynn and then Rittenhouse to keep the suspense up. Plus every week a new set of era-appropriate costumes!

While those bits are all great, part of why I love this show is all the small details that just make you either laugh, go ‘awww’ or ‘hum, I wonder how that might affect the timeline’.  There is also the whole time travel bit that I’m still not hundred 100% about how it works, but that makes me want to watch more to understand things better.

Awesome thing 1 – Their “Fake” Identities

From Lucy’s “This is Doctor Dre and I’m Nurse Jackie, we’re from General Hospital” to “Juliet Shakes-man” to “I’m Dr. Quin and I’m a medicine woman” or even her using their normal names and being all “You never heard of Wyatt and Lucy?” when talking to Bonnie & Clyde, whenever Lucy is picking their names it’s sure to be something that makes you crack up a little (at least I do).

The rest of the gang have clearly picked up on this too, Wyatt’s fake FIB badge names him as Agent Mulder and one of Rufus’s driver’s licences says Wesley Snipes and he calls himself Denzel Washington and Kanye (which elicits the hilarious response ‘whoever heard of a name like Kanye, sounds made up to me‘).

These are just some extra little fun touches but they add so much. It’s a ‘hey, this is serious but we’re still normal people’ vibe to the show. And let’s be honest, it would be really easy to just use TV and movie characters (and actor names) when pretending to be someone else in the past. It’s fun, easy to remember and takes the edge off the seriousness of the situation a little.

The “Ma’am” Thing

So Wyatt and Lucy’s first meeting goes something like

Lucy: Are you asleep?

Wyatt: No, ma’am.

Lucy: Oh, okay…Do you know why we’re here?

Wyatt: No idea, ma’am.

Lucy: You know, we’re pretty much the same age, you can just stop calling me ma’am.

Wyatt:tumblr_of95bsvkn51u4ypbyo1_250

So yeah, I think this was pretty much when the shipping for these two began (for me at least). But it could have been in the Lifeboat (the name of the time machine) when he once again calls her “Ma’am” and she tells him not to.

Then we have him calling her ‘ma’am’ after helping her by talking about finding a reason to fight and after she thanks him he says “Sure thing, ma’am” and they’re looking at each other all adorably. Now the ma’am has gone from something he did to annoy her to something else.

The next ma’am moment is when he tells her he’s stealing the lifeboat and going to get his wife back. Which is an all-around heartbreaking scene, made even more so by the conversation Lucy has with Jiya about it later (“Wyatt told me.”), but anyways. He calls her ma’am and by this point it just makes you go ‘aaahww so cute’. At least I did.

So with Wyatt stealing the time machine and all he gets shipped off to a black site and Lucy and Rufus get stuck with another soldier. A buddy of Wyatt’s actually. Only when Fake!Wyatt goes all ‘ma’am’ on Lucy, she’s like “Lucy is fine” and you can just see it’s totally making her think about Wyatt.

Last one his the funniest one, when yet another soldier) – this one, one of the bad guys – calls her ma’am, she’s all “Don’t you ma’am me!”efbfecc9b968dea4adca4fc5f15282a4

Okay, I’m not sure if I explained that but just go watch the show and listen for the ma’ams and you’ll see how the ma’am thing is just a nice little touch that adds a lot.

The Gang Feels

So starting out neither Lucy, Rufus or Wyatt know each other. We already got the (sort of) meet-cute between Wyatt / Lucy and the time travel reveal (Rufus already knew about it since he’s working on the project.)

The gang goes on their very first mission and by the end of it they’ve been arrested, escaped from prison, stopped a bomb from going off and grounded an airship by pretending to be terrorists, watched a woman die in front of them. Pretty intense first few hours of knowing each other. And by the end of it (and through the following episodes), they kind of bond.

Trouble is Lucy has some secret conversations with the bad guy and Rufus is recording them for the other bad guys. Which is really sucky for Wyatt who is all “I don’t trust either one of you”. But it makes them saving, helping and re-learning to trust each other even more awesome.

The banter about stealing cars and who is better at hotwiring them is fun. Chocodiles. Lucy being kidnapped and the guys going to save her (and ending up needing to be saved by her) is so sweet. Wyatt asking Rufus to go with him to save his wife in the past, him telling Lucy because he trusts her and just the all-around team feels throughout.

29e59a734f535590663a043a4dd06cfd.jpgPoint is, the team is great especially when they’re saving each other or just completing the mission or do something funny or awkward or future-related together. They’re like the Scooby Gang (only grown up and with time travel instead of vampires) or at least giving me similar feels. Which is great because Buffy was the first TV-show I fell in love with.

Lyatt (Lucy / Wyatt)

If you read my post about my favorite love stories, you know I’m a big fan of action/ adventure with a romantic sub-plot. Timeless has that in both Lucy / Wyatt and Rufus / Jiya, even though my shipper heart beats extra strong for Lyatt because of the potential for angst with them. You know with the whole he has a dead wife that could possibly come back (because of drama, probably right when Lucy / Wyatt get together) to life/ never have died.

Things to come…

Also, I like that there hasn’t been a huge focus on the possible Lyatt romance, instead letting season 1 kind of lay the groundwork for things to come. Sure, we did get that  Bonnie & Clyde ep where they were pretending to be a couple which was kind of fun (and awkward). But what really makes me ship these are the small things like Wyatt helping Lucy with her seatbelt in the Lifeboat, how they just look at each other and help each other deal with the trauma of being time travelers (and other stuff). I love organic relationships a lot more than the ‘omg we met two minutes ago, let’s get married’ ones and I feel like Lucy and Wyatt got something that’s grown pretty naturally.

Number 5 &6 on the awesome list are Amy + Changed Timeline (Need More Of It)

So Lucy’s sister Amy going missing (or well being erased from history) and Lucy trying to get her back is just a really cool touch. Plus even though we didn’t get to see much of them together, I really liked what we got from the sisters, it was sweet and nice.

And while I really hope Lucy gets her sister back I love that they did change things big time for Lucy in the Pilot and kind of wished more things they did in the past would alter the future/ present somehow during the season. Like them actually coming back to a different world because the screwed up somehow. I get that there was so much going on in season 1, they didn’t have time for that, but part of why time travel timeless season 2is so interesting is the possible ways the world could change. Is it a butterfly effect (one small thing become a huge one) or more of a fate one (smaller changes will correct themselves) and even though the show has touched on fate/destiny / free will, I’d love to get more of it.

In fact, I want a lot more time machine stuff and questions answered in general.

Like, it would be good to know just how it would work if one of the team members accidentally erased themselves in a Grandfather paradox kind of way. Like how Flynn suggested Lucy might not exist after he took out Rittenhouse. Would they come back and just not have ever existed and kind of slowly begin to fade (Back to the Future style), leaving the rest of the gang to try to go back to fix things? Get arrested because no one remembers them going in the time machine?

Or are the protected in the lifeboat? Amy’s picture stayed safe in there and then remained afterward (could have disappeared once they got back to the present/ out of the Lifeboat) as did Lucy’s memories of her.

Does that mean the time machine exists outside of space-time? Agent Christopher wanting to keep her USB stick of her family in there seems to imply that is how it is. Do Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus exist outside of time too now? Does Jiya with her weird flashback?

Then if Flynn managed to destroy Rittenhouse and they went to a future without Rittenhouse (who paid for the building of the machine) would the Lifeboat remain because once built, it is outside of the time-space stream? Or would the machine blink out from existence since it wouldn’t exist in the new present?

And, a question I’ve been wondering about since day one…

How does the time machine teleport?

HOW?

Is it a Tardis? If so, where is the Doctor?

My favorite 2016 (fall) new TV shows!

Wow! I haven’t posted in a long while, been feeling really ‘meheww’ about writing (and thinking) for a good long while. But since….

omt1kfsmp5l3ugxmo4os

… and life was slow and boring last week I’ve watched the first few episodes of all the new shows I had decided to check out this fall. And suddenly totally wanted to share my thoughts.

So I didn’t have that many shows I was excited about coming out this fall. Lethal Weapon looked cool and I was intrigued by the Timeless concept and Westworld looked cool but kind of not my thing (I have issues with robots. they wig me out.)

See! Super scary!

Okay! Let’s get to the reviewing!

Timeless

First of all, I was right that Timeless (check out the trailer) was going to be cool! I freaking love shows with stuff like this. Get in a cool machine and WHAM you’re in the past. (Makes me think of Stargate SG 1 except SG 1 was about going different planets…and aliens that all spoke English. Yeah, it’s a bit like that because even Abraham Lincoln is like “Dude, rock on”.)

Anyway.

This is Lucy. The weird metal thing behind her is the time machine.

3027e31d-8f0a-4083-ad7c-9d199d928229

Basic concept: Terrorist stole a time machine and is trying to muck it up. Lucy (a slightly awkward history professor) and Wyatt (solider with dead wife as backstory) and Ruffus (their black driver…I mean pilot, who is smart and adorable) are being sent back in the “back-up” time machine to stop said terrorist from destroying the past and present/future. Kind of. With cool costumes.

timeless-promo-eras

Okay so for me, this show totally works. It’s got a fun premise, the characters are different enough from each other to make for an interesting team and there is some action, some funny stuff, some history, really cool costumes and potential for lots of drama and moral discussions (like should we really keep history the same? Wouldn’t saving Lincoln from being assassinated be a good thing? Lucy’s sister disappearing because of history changing – can we fix it (yes we can…no builder Bob, back in the toybox) and saving Wyatt’s dead wife? (Could that be possible?) And some mystery about the whole Rittenhouse (the group the terrorist is trying to wipe from existence) and just generally where we’re going next!

Also Lucy -played Abigail Spencer – is so adorable and Wyatt is totally not bad to look at either…and I’m totally shipping them already. So they got that going for them!

And I love their fake names; Juliet Shakesman, Nurse Jackie, Denzel Washington, Buck Rogers and when they joke about future stuff and no one gets it but them.

What more can you ask for? I for one am really loving it and can’t wait to see what funny wacky adventures the gang ends up on next week! I’m also hoping for time travel smarty-pants breakthrough that lets you travel to places when you were alive (because I’m so totally thinking Wyatt is the ‘someone’ who saved Lucy when her car crashed…ten years before their first meeting. Okay maybe not, but it was just something about that story that made me think that. I guess time will tell…hehe time travel joke!)

There are of course some things that don’t make sense. Like what is really going on with Flynn? Is he from the future; where he knows Lucy who is helping them or some weird AU? Like an alternate timeline and he’s actually trying to fix history the way it was in his world. No…maybe. Probably not.

AND how is the time machine also a teleporter? (Is it like the Doctor’s box? Then why isn’t it bigger on the inside?) I mean time travel is impressive enough without teleportation added. But I get why they made it a teleporter too…because of FUN and COOLNESS! But still maybe someone should have explained it too? Like here is how you time travel (folds over paper) and here is how you teleport (folds paper into airplane…wait, someone already invented that).

The nitpicker in me also wonders WHY WERE THE LEAVES AND GRASS GREEN in December in western Germany? Why no frost and no one wearing gloves? Has no one been to West Germany in December? How about West Washington? I haven’t been to West Germany but I’m pretty sure it’s colder than that in December!

Also, did they really speak like normal English back in 1885? I mean they all sounded kind of stuffy, but how easy would it really have been to understand? And why is Wyatt’s hair so CUTE? I love that his hair is adorably messy but in like the 20-60s wouldn’t people be like…”who is this homeless person with the bed head!”

Next show on the list…

Convictionhayley-atwell-drinks-and-snorts-cocaine-in-first-trailer-for-abc-show-conviction-social

Agent Carter has become a slutty but awesome lawyer. Hayley Atwell is really…well there is just something so compelling about her. No matter what she does, who she plays, or whatever, I just can’t not be fascinated. She’s simply cool and the character she plays is just such a mess!

But while I enjoyed Convictions first few episodes (well mostly Atwell being totally awesome as Hayes Morrison) there is one kind of big problem with the whole thing. Why would you hire someone – even an ex-first daughter – instead of letting them go to jail for drug possession (or whatever)? WHY? WHY????? I get that there is no show without it, but still. You knew it was going to cause trouble, yes I’m talking to you DA Wallace. Sure you want to sleep with her (again?) and you want to make her possibly soon to be President mom happy, but still… there had to have been a smarter solution.

But we’re just going to accept that’s what happened and move on. To the next kind of problem; why is there so much stuff happening? The premises of the show is this group of legal people from various parts of the criminal justice system try to ‘resolve’ cases that maybe weren’t properly investigated the first time around. Cool idea. We get a case of the week but it’s not ‘solve the murder and find the killer’ but more sort of ‘find the truth, maybe free someone maybe innocent’. So we get to root for the little guy, Hayes gets to stick it to the man and all that good stuff.

Except for fact that the case of the week take up like 1 % of the stuff going on. Okay, maybe a little more. But there is also Hayes and the DA boss guy – who is also her ex and dude she wants to have angry sex with – her Mom president to be, tension on the team (Jimmy Olsson wants to steal her job), plus her ragtag band of crime…reviewers? aren’t exactly working super well together yet and just general Hayes being Hayes. It just feels like too much stuff going on somehow.

Still, Hayes is such a hot mess it works. The cases seem to be getting more into focus and the team is more solid after a few eps. Hayes is still making a bit of trouble but she’s really into this new job of hers so she’s trying…But it’s not going super. Which makes us like her more! Why do we love people that are total messes? What’s wrong with us? And why did that last scene in the ep. with Haze and the olive tree make me want to cry?

Bull

I actually hadn’t seen the trailer for this when I watched the pilot. Tony, tired of solving navy crimes has left the NCIS to become a jury fixer. Basically, he tailors a jury to make sure to get the right verdict for his client.

It’s kind of fun but in a while, I think it’s going to get a little boring. It’s always in a courtroom, always trying to get the jury on the right side. I don’t know, maybe they can make it work. And what’s up with all the employees, I get the tech girl and the FBI chick and the lawyer but the rest? It’s kind of bad sign when you don’t really know or can really super remember the difference between the characters after a few eps.

Things that don’t make sense: Where does the money to help these clients come from? Why is Tony getting so old? Is the point of this show to make me lose faith (if I ever had any) in the American justice system?

Lethal Weapon

lw_best_bud_app_1200x1200_v01_2

So this is also a FUN show. It’s also kind of got some real serious bits. Dead pregnant wife as backstory serious. But they’re still keeping it pretty light. It’s basically the budding partnership between these two very different guys. Things blow up a lot too, which is both fun and kind of annoying.

MacGyver (2016)

Reboots are kind of hard. It’s OK but so far it feels like nothing is being MacGyver-ed! I mean sure stuff is being made from weird stuff but nothing super exciting. It’s all things I could work out with like five seconds on google and/or a life hacks vid on youtube! Or Burn Notice or Scorpion has already done it! And why does MacGyver look about 12? Why is the computer girl not in more scenes! She rocks!

The Rising

Planning on checking out Frequency, Van Helsing and Designated Survivor after their first seasons are done. Also Westworld. Maybe. If I can get over my fear of robots 😀 The No Tomorrow romantic comedy also seems fun but I think I’ll wait until the first season is done.

Thoughts some of the other shows I’m following and how they’re doing on their second, third or sixth season!

I’m still fangirling Lucifer, which I got hooked on last year. Mom is awesome! Finally divorcing the ex is good. Amenadiel losing his wings after hooking up with Maze and just being bad is also cool!

Blindspot, which I loved so much when it first came out has lost some of its appeal but I’m still into it enough I’m watching every week. It feels like a whole different show in season 2, but I’m glad we’re getting answers about why Jane has the tattoos and Weller’s name on her back. But more tattoo cases! They were fun!

Arrow (+ Flash)I finally gave up on this year after one ep. I’m just going to erase like the last season and pretend it ended when Oliver and Felicity just drove off into the sunset at the end of season 3. Flash after Flashpoint feels weird and I’ll probably marathon the first half of the season over Christmas.

Once Upon a Time is moving so sloooow, it’s like you need to watch four episodes for the main characters to actually do something because there are so many minor characters we(I) don’t really care about running around having their stories told. No offense but I want Emma! Snow! Hook! Henry! Maybe bring back Elsa she was so cool (I just had to!) This is the last season (or so I heard) and I just want good things for all the heroes, even Regina! And a Captain Swan wedding, if that’s not too much!

Limitless…is season 2 happening or what? It was canceled, then it was bought by someone else, then canceled again? Or what? I’m just confused because it was a funny show with so much potential!

Scorpion is getting annoying with all the Walter Loves Paige shit taking focus. It’s cute but stop rubbing our faces in it; it’s just weird now. Do love the Happy/Toby baby thing though! So awesome!

Quantico ended season 1 pretty well. It worked for me. Now season 2 (which I have yet to start watching) is going to be something similar but with a new government agency… is it really still cool to call it Quantico then? I don’t know. I’ll probably check out all the eps after the midseason finale.

Did I miss some awesome new show this fall? You like or hate any of the new arrivals I mentioned?
